This privately owned farm pond is viewable from a small pull-off at the intersection of Carters Wharf Road and Newland Road (624). That this pond has promising habitat for shorebirds is immediately apparent to any passing birder. The gently sloping shoreline with abundant mud coupled with a gradient of shallow to deeper water produces excellent conditions for a variety of shorebirds, waders, and waterfowl. Given that portions of the pond are not viewable from the public road, patient viewing is the best way to find birds nestled in hidden coves. White-rumped Sandpiper is the current shorebird highlight, but Baird’s, Stilt, Buff-breasted, Western, and others all seem possible here. Waterfowl recorded include both dabblers and divers, as well as geese. Not to be forgotten, swallow diversity is also high with all regularly occurring swallows, save Cliff, having been reported.
