Orange County Airport

Orange County Airport is located three miles east of the town of Orange, and is owned and operated by Orange County. There is a single 3200 foot runway that runs east/west. The area of the airport includes the runway, a wide buffer on all sides, a main terminal (on the north side of the runway), and several hangars and buildings. On the south side of the runway—easily accessed from Route 20 (Constitution Highway)—is a small building with an adjacent parking lot. This is one of the most convenient vantage points of the runway, and allows for favorable lighting at nearly all times.

The airport has been little birded, with very few checklists having been submitted since the first in 2017. A mere 32 species have been observed, though the habitat is limited and will never boast a hefty total. Still, as a winter stop while birding Orange County, the grassland inside the fences is likely to host Northern Harrier, Eastern Meadowlark, Savannah Sparrow, Horned Lark, and Killdeer. After a February snowfall in 2025, thousands of Ring-billed Gulls were seen loafing on the runway for several days (with several American Herring Gulls mixed in). A dusk visit might produce a Short-eared Owl during a good year. During the breeding season, one can expect to find Grasshopper Sparrows, Eastern Meadowlarks, and Blue Grosbeaks. In migration, an enterprising birder may wish to pay a visit with Upland Sandpiper on the mind.
